The idea of competing in a Super Bowl is the dream of every aspiring football player. Frankly, I grew up playing and watching others play soccer – the European equivalent of American football – so I’m no authority in the science and psychology of playing in and hoping to win the super bowl. As a resident of Colorado though, I’m rooting for the Broncos! Sorry, Seahawks fans. But no matter who wins on February 2, here are three important lessons every small business and entrepreneur can learn from the Super Bowl.
Make it a Big Deal
NFL Super Bowl XLVIII is a big deal. Like all previous Super Bowls, the day of the game is popularly called Super Bowl Sunday and considered by some as a de facto American national holiday. It is the second largest day for U.S. food consumption, after Thanksgiving (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Bowl). Why will any small business not make this a big deal and cash in with quality goods, superior service and professional presence in the market place of their industry. As an entrepreneur, you owe it to yourself, your business and your customers to make the Super Bowl a big deal.
Adapt Smart Marketing Strategy
During the last Broncos Super Bowl playoff game with the New England Patriots, Denver Broncos quarterback, Peyton Manning, raised $24800 for his charity, Peyback Foundation by shouting “Omaha, Omaha”, 44 times. According to some experts, each mention of Omaha could cost $150,000 in advertising. This means that the following participating companies: ConAgra Foods, First National Bank of Omaha, Mutual of Omaha, Omaha Steaks, Cox Communications, CenturyLink, Union Pacific railroad and DJ’s Dugout Sports Bar & Grill. really got heir monies worth.
So what could your own business do to raise awareness of your brand by supporting a local organization? Whether it’s a school, neighborhood activity, food pantry, or Church, find a way to engage with your community and see how social media outlets like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram etc could end up expanding your reach through social-media-word-of-mouth.
Business Should be Fun
Professional football is no laughing matter but it’s certainly fun. The excitement, energy and enthusiasm vibrates throughout the game at the stadium and before giant TV screens all across the country.
Find every way possible to make doing business fun. It’s a pain to wake up early to attend to a business you dread of opening to customers. If you are going to invest a lot of time and energy to build your business, it must as well be fun doing it.
So to recap, it is clear that the every small business could take a clue from the Super Bowl and make their brand and business product, service or strategy a big deal no matter its current size, adapt a smart marketing strategy and have fun doing business.
All the best to the Denver Broncos and New England Seahawks at the Super Bowl XLVIII in New Jersey. May the best team win. Go Broncos!
